PSA: getting a flawless tan is all about the prep. The secret? A smooth, hydrated base and the right products to make your tan last longer and fade evenly. Here’s your step-by-step guide to nailing that glow.
1. Exfoliate Like a Pro
Flawless tans start with fresh skin. Dead cells sitting on the surface = patchy tan, and no one wants that.
Use an Exfoliating Mitt with a Body Scrub, like our Revitalise & Renew or Dead Sea Scrub to gently buff away dryness and smooth skin texture. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, and ankles (the spots where tan clings the most).
Pro tip: Exfoliate the night before tanning, not the same day, to let your skin settle.
2. Shave Smart
If you’re planning to shave your legs, do it at least 24 hours before tanning. Shaving too close to tanning can leave pores open, which might cause dotting (aka strawberry legs) when the colour develops. Use a fresh razor and moisturising Shave Cream for a silky-smooth finish that sets the stage for even tanning.
3. Moisturise the Right Way
Hydration is key for a streak-free tan. Apply a light moisturiser, paying special attention to dry-prone areas (like knees, ankles, and elbows) about 24 hours before tanning. Avoid slathering it on right before you tan, as too much product can act as a barrier.
4. Apply Your Tan ✨
Now for the fun part...
-
For beginners: Start with a Gradual Tan Lotion, or opt for a tanning mousse if you prefer a deeper colour that develops faster. Both are great for an even, natural finish.
-
For a custom glow: Try mixing Tanning Drops into your everyday moisturiser or serum. You control the depth of colour and can just add more drops for a deeper bronze.
For best results, use a velvet applicator mitt to apply your tan in smooth, sweeping motions. If you’re using a moisturiser-based tan, you can apply with your hands - just be sure to wash them thoroughly afterwards. Always work from the ankles upward for an even finish.
Pro tip: Grab a Kabuki Brush to blend product seamlessly onto tricky areas like hands, feet, and around your ankles (it’s the secret to avoiding those tell-tale streaks).
5. Post-Tan Care 🌙
Keep your tan looking fresh by:
-
Avoiding long, hot showers or baths that strip your skin.
-
Patting skin dry instead of rubbing with a towel.
-
Moisturising daily to lock in hydration.
